Ambassador of Ukraine to Poland Vasyl Bodnar commented on the appearance of a banner with the inscription “We remember Volyn” on the stands of Polish fans during the match between Shakhtar Donetsk and Legia Warsaw.
The match was played in Krakow, as Shakhtar cannot play games in Donetsk, which is occupied by Russia. During the meeting, Legia fans unfurled a poster that the Ukrainian side considered provocative.
“During the Shakhtar Donetsk match against Legia Warsaw, provocative banners appeared in the stands, not related to the sports event or team support. Respecting the right of Polish fans to express their opinion, it is difficult to understand the motives of such a provocation,” wrote Bodnar on the social network Kh.
The diplomat asked rhetorical questions: “Is this aimed at overshadowing Poland’s assistance to Ukrainians who found refuge from the war, or is it an attempt to drown out the athletes’ words of gratitude with negative comments, or a desire to divert attention from the real threat from Russia, including for Poland?”
The ambassador emphasized that despite such incidents, Ukrainians will continue to thank Poland for supporting Ukrainian athletes and sports in general since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.
To his post, he added a video in which Shakhtar players express their gratitude to the Polish people.
Shakhtar Donetsk played a nominally home match against Polish Legia in the second round of the Conference League. However, the match did not take place in Ukraine – the miners hosted the team from Warsaw in Krakow, Poland.
