On October 4-5, the first Horuna Cup tournament was held in the Halychyna sports complex in Lviv, initiated by the bronze medalist of the 2020 Olympic Games, Stanislav Horuna, in cooperation with the Lviv club “Odyssey” and with the support of philanthropist Vasyl Kostyuk.
Almost 500 athletes from 28 karate clubs from Kyiv, Odesa, Chernivtsi, Zhytomyr, Lviv, Kharkiv, Poltava and other Ukrainian cities took part in the tournament.
A special feature of the Horuna Cup was a new competitive concept. In particular, in the main “absolute” category, the matches did not last three minutes, as according to standard rules, but until the moment when one of the opponents scored seven points. Judging was done by video replays broadcast to the audience in the hall and during the online broadcast on Megogo Gong. The duration of the matches ranged from two to eighteen minutes.

“I want the Horuna Cup to become a tournament of bright matches. For me, it was always not so important to win, and even more so not to participate. It was important for me not to win a medal, but to win the hearts and sympathies of the audience”, – noted the legendary Ukrainian karateka Stanislav Horuna. According to him, the Horuna Cup is designed to draw attention to the spectacle of karate and make the competition interesting for spectators.
The tournament aroused considerable interest among athletes and fans. According to the organizers, later it is planned to make the competitions international and to involve in their organization and holding, in particular, representatives of Poland, Spain and even Venezuela.
