The Swiss People’s Party (SVP) has submitted an initiative to the National Council to fully abolish the status of protection for S for Ukrainian citizens. As an argument, politicians have stated that much of the Ukrainian territory is not currently covered by combat operations and can be considered stable.
NZZ writes about it.
As of May 2025, the status of S in Switzerland had more than 69 thousand Ukrainians. Since the beginning of the year, 3,300 new applications for defense have been submitted, while about 2600 people have returned to Ukraine. Despite the increase in employment, two -thirds of refugees remain dependent on social assistance.
Last year, Parliament had already supported the proposal to limit the status of S for those who come from relatively safe regions. The changes did not affect the persons already in Switzerland.
The Federal Council must publish a list of Ukrainian regions that will be considered safe to return to the summer holidays.
Earlier, we wrote that despite the interest of European countries in Ukrainian refugees as an important demographic and labor resource, in some countries, the local population is becoming more and more negative about Ukrainians.
The Council of the European Union unanimously supported the proposal to continue temporary protection for Ukrainian citizens for another year – until March 4, 2027.
