“We have a bill on amendments to the Constitution, which was made at the beginning of the cadence, on the reduction of the number of deputies to 300. But, unfortunately, during the martial law, and before that, we had no opportunity, we did not have opportunities, because during martial law we cannot vote for changes to the Constitution,” he said.
According to Stefanchuk, in the first reading a large number of people’s deputies would support this decision. After that, the relevant proposals would be sent to the Constitutional Court.
“The Constitutional Court sent us with its reservations, but I think these reservations can be overcome in parliament. Next, I think that this issue can also be raised, ”the VRU Chairman said.
He recalled that the nature of parliament is a representative function. Moreover, under the new election Code, Ukraine moves to a proportional system, without majority, so the representative number should be such that it represents all segments of the population of Ukraine, but in the corresponding proportion.
“And so, when we were 52 million – 450 deputies, it was justified. After the war, we need to see because I think that this idea is entitled to life, ”Stefanchuk added.
When asked whether a decision to reduce Parliament can be made before the potential elections, he replied: “Look, everything can be made. The question is just how we and when we finish this terrible war. Therefore, this issue is not a number one for Ukraine, but is very important in the context of post -war restoration of Ukraine. “
