Slovak President Proposes Constitutional Changes Following Drone Incident

The President of Slovakia, Peter Pellegrini, has announced plans to amend the constitution to introduce a new “state of threat” in response to a recent incident involving a Russian drone near the Ukrainian border.

This initiative was prompted by a significant attack on Ukraine, during which the drone was detected in the vicinity of the town of Perechyn in the Transcarpathian region. Perechyn is located approximately ten kilometers from the Slovak border, raising concerns in Bratislava.

Pellegrini stated that he intends to convene a roundtable discussion soon, where military representatives will explain the proposed amendments and their implications for national security to political parties.

The President hopes the discussions will proceed without political conflict between the ruling party and the opposition.

According to Pellegrini, the current legislation only allows for a state of peace or a state of war, lacking intermediate mechanisms. This limitation restricts the military’s ability to respond effectively to potential threats during peacetime.

He emphasized that establishing this new status would enable quicker preventive measures in situations such as the potential crash of drones or other objects approaching Slovak territory.

Slovak President Peter Pellegrini plans constitutional amendments to introduce a new 'state of threat' following a drone incident near Ukraine. The changes aim to enhance national security and improve military response capabilities.
