On September 17, Ukrainian employees who participate in the civil protection of the population of our country celebrate their professional holiday – the Day of the Rescuer or the Day of Civil Protection Workers of Ukraine. The holiday was established on September 12, 2008 by a decree of the President of Ukraine in support of the initiative of the public and the Ministry of Emergency Situations and the Protection of the Population from the Consequences of the Chornobyl Disaster. Today, employees of these services are heroically rescuing Ukrainians from the consequences of Russian aggression, as well as often victims of Russian terror.

On Wednesday, September 17, the Orthodox believers commemorate the memory of the Holy Martyr Sophia and her daughters – faith, hope and love. According to church legend, Sofia lived in Rome in the time of Emperor Adrian (117-138). She was a deeply believing Christian and raising her daughters – faith (12 years), hope (10 years) and love (9 years) – in piety. The names of children were symbolized by the three main virtues of Christianity, and Sofia himself represented the wisdom of God.
When the authorities learned about their faith, the family was brought to court to the emperor. Adrian tried to inclined them to apostasy, promising wealth and privileges, but the girls remained faithful to Christ. They were subjected to terrible torture and executed in the eyes of the mother. Sofia buried her daughters and after three days died near their graves from grief and prayer.
In honor of this church holiday in Ukraine, the Day of Adoption is noted. The holiday is established in Ukraine “… taking into account the social significance of adoption in ensuring the right of each child to upbringing in the family, in order to support and develop national adoption…” According to the Decree of the President of Ukraine “On the Day of Adoption” of November 27, 2008. The establishment of the holiday was announced at the All -Ukrainian Adoption Forum, which took place on November 27, 2008 in Kiev.
