The Finnish president’s call to exclude Russia from the UN Security Council is not the first time, but according to the UN charter, this is extremely difficult to achieve.
This was stated by the representative of the US State Department Matthew Miller, reports Ukrinform.
“If you look at the UN Charter, this is something that would be incredibly difficult to achieve,” said a US State Department official.
He also added that such calls are not being made for the first time when Russia began and expanded its invasion of Ukraine.
“We are focused on things that are possible,” the State Department spokesman added.
On September 18, the President of Finland, Alexander Stubb, called for expanding the composition of the UN Security Council, canceling the right of veto, and ending Russia’s membership.
Previously, the US representative to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, announced the proposals of the United States for the reform of the UN Security Council. According to her, the USA supports the idea of inclusive reform, which will enable the Security Council “effectively solve today’s challenges”.
At the same time, she noted that there is a mechanism for excluding countries that violate the UN Charter, but its proceedings are “very difficult”.
