On March 28, Russian forces targeted a residential building in the Sumy region, resulting in the tragic death of 20-year-old Dasha Serhiyenko, who shielded her six-year-old sister during the attack.
The incident occurred around noon in the Znob-Novhorodske community of the Shostka district, as confirmed by local prosecutors. The artillery strike left the younger sister severely injured.
Authorities from the Sumy Regional State Administration reported that the six-year-old is in critical condition and has undergone surgery. Medical teams are currently working to stabilize her condition, consulting with specialists from the Okhmatdyt hospital.
The girl’s parents were also injured but have received necessary medical attention and are by their daughter’s side.
Dasha was a student at the Shostka Medical College, where it was noted that she sacrificed herself to protect her sister during the bombardment. A statement from the college expressed deep condolences to her family, highlighting her act as a symbol of ultimate selflessness.
The ongoing shelling in the Sumy region has resulted in daily attacks, leading to civilian casualties and damage to homes and critical infrastructure, particularly in border communities. Russian forces have employed various weaponry, including guided bombs, rockets, artillery, and drones.
Recently, another attack resulted in three fatalities and 13 injuries. In previous incidents, enemy drones targeted vehicles, causing additional tragedies, including the deaths of a truck driver and a motorcyclist. Additionally, a Russian drone attacked a passenger train in the Sumy region, necessitating the evacuation of passengers.
