Russian Military Losses in Ukraine Conflict Reach Over 1.27 Million, Reports Ukrainian General Staff

According to the Ukrainian General Staff, Russia has suffered significant military losses since the onset of the full-scale war against Ukraine, with the total number of military personnel lost now exceeding 1.27 million. In the past day alone, 810 additional personnel were reported lost.

Details released by the Ukrainian command also highlight substantial losses in military equipment. As of March 14, the figures include:

  • Tanks: 11,777 (+4 in the last day)
  • Armored fighting vehicles: 24,212 (+10)
  • Artillery systems: 38,421 (+52)
  • Multiple launch rocket systems: 1,686 (+1)
  • Air defense systems: 1,332 (+1)
  • Aircraft: 435
  • Helicopters: 349
  • Tactical drones: 177,286 (+2,147)
  • Cruise missiles: 4,403
  • Ships/boats: 31
  • Submarines: 2
  • Vehicles and fuel tankers: 83,403 (+180)
  • Specialized equipment: 4,088

Russia has not officially disclosed its military losses, with the last reported figure of 5,937 fatalities being announced in September 2022. Meanwhile, independent Russian media outlets, including Meduza and the BBC Russian Service, along with volunteer teams, have identified over 200,000 names of Russian soldiers who have died since February 2022. This list is considered incomplete, as information on all casualties is not publicly accessible.

Estimates of total Russian casualties, including both wounded and killed, from international organizations and intelligence agencies are considerably higher. A NATO official, speaking anonymously in December 2025, indicated that the total number of dead and wounded in the Russian military could approach 1.15 million. The official noted that in November, daily losses for Russia averaged around 1,100 personnel.

Ukraine has also refrained from disclosing its own losses, stating that such information would be released post-conflict. However, President Volodymyr Zelensky has begun to provide updates approximately once a year. In an interview with France 2 in early February 2026, he stated that Ukraine has lost 55,000 soldiers since February 2022, while also noting that a significant number of individuals are considered missing.

Ukrainian Armed Forces Commander Oleksandr Syrskyi reported on January 13 that the number of personnel losses for the Ukrainian military was reduced by 13% in 2025, though he did not provide specific figures regarding Ukrainian casualties.

The Ukrainian General Staff reports that Russia's military losses have surpassed 1.27 million personnel since the war began, with significant equipment losses also documented. Independent sources suggest that the true extent of casualties may be even higher, while Ukraine has disclosed its own losses selectively.
