Oil products have been discovered in the protected Ukrainian territories of the Sea of Azov, and they may not be from the recently sunken Russian tankers.

The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine reports this on Facebook.

According to the data of the Azov National Park, pollution was detected in separate areas within the coastal zone from the Stepanivska Kosa landscape reserve to the border with the Kherson region, including parts of the Kosa Fedotova and Kosa Peresyp landscape reserves.

The total length of the coastal areas with detected pollution reaches 27.1 km, the width of the fuel oil discharge on the shore is up to 3 meters.

The oil spill is preliminarily associated with a man-made accident – the sinking of the Russian tankers “Volgoneft-212” and “Volgoneft-239” in the Kerch Strait.

However, specialists of the Ukrainian Scientific Center for Marine Ecology point out that, due to a number of reasons, these centers of pollution have a different origin. These reasons are physical limitations of the spread of fuel oil under the influence of easterly winds and, taking into account the speed of sea currents and the distance from the accident site to the contaminated areas.

“Therefore, the contamination may have been caused by another accident that occurred closer to the areas in question (probably south of the detection area). Part of the fuel oil that got to the coast could have come from bottom sediments, where it accumulated as a result of similar incidents,” the message reads.

The Ministry of Environment noted that despite the unknown origin of this fuel oil, it has a negative effect on the state of ecology. Its pollution leads to the death of plankton, fish and benthic organisms, poisoning of birds and cetaceans that come into contact with the oil film. Sedimentation of heavy fractions of fuel oil in bottom sediments poses a long-term threat to ecosystems.

As reported, on the morning of December 15, the Russian ships Volgoneft 212 and Volgoneft 239 began to sink near the Kerch Strait. Previously, the cause of the incident was a storm and damage to tankers due to bad weather.

It will be recalled that on December 15, two Russian oil tankers, Volgoneft-212 and Volgoneft-239, sank near the coast in the Kerch Strait. As a result of the accident, more than 4,000 tons of water spilled into the Black Sea. tons of fuel oil.

We also wrote that, according to the Navy of Ukraine, the Russian tankers with oil products were old and, moreover, went out to sea without complying with shipping requirements.
