Russia has expressed its willingness to ensure a ceasefire on the day of potential elections in Ukraine, contingent upon Kyiv’s decision to proceed with the voting.
A Russian diplomat stated that Moscow could guarantee “silence” during the election day if the Ukrainian government opts to hold elections. Additionally, he mentioned that Russia is open to discussions with the United States and other nations regarding temporary external governance of Ukraine under UN auspices.
In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has emphasized that elections can only take place after hostilities cease and security guarantees are established. He indicated that Ukraine would be ready to organize the electoral process following a necessary preparation period, provided a ceasefire is achieved.
“I am very honest. Give us two months of ceasefire, and we will go to elections. We need a ceasefire and security infrastructure. Perhaps not two months, but we need many days to prepare,” Zelensky stated.
The president reiterated that Ukraine will not announce elections without appropriate security conditions, highlighting that voting is only feasible with a stable ceasefire in place.
