President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said that the USA is not yet ready to see Ukraine in NATO. At the same time, Kyiv is waiting for effective bilateral security guarantees from Washington, which can become a temporary alternative. Ukraine wants to understand the details of these guarantees in the coming days.
During a conversation with the media, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi noted that the question of Ukraine’s membership in NATO remains open, but not imminent. According to him, the United States has not yet demonstrated readiness to accept Ukraine into the Alliance.
“Ukraine’s membership in NATO is a matter of the future,” Zelenskyi said. Instead, Kyiv is now concentrating on real, working security guarantees. The President emphasized that it is not only about the European “Coalition of the Willing”, but also about the key partner – the USA.
“Bilateral security guarantees of Ukraine and the USA are very important for us,” he emphasized. Zelensky clarified that the 20-point document discussed by the parties contains a provision that actually repeats the principle of Article 5 of NATO. “The document refers to Article 5 MIRL – that is, the same as Article 5 in NATO,” the president explained.
He added that Ukraine wants to receive clear and understandable conditions in the coming days: “We want to understand this issue in detail in the coming days, weeks. I think, after all, one of these days, we will understand the details of these security guarantees.”
Ukraine expects that such guarantees can become a real shield while the path to NATO remains a long-term prospect.
