Russian dictator Vladimir Putin continues to use history as a justification for war against Ukraine. The Center for Countering Disinformation of the National Security Council of Ukraine declares that behind the talk about “archives” and “historical documents” is another attempt to legalize aggression and war crimes.
The reason for the reaction was the statement of the head of Rosarchiv Andrii Artizov, who spoke about Putin’s alleged special attitude to historical sources. “Putin likes to read authentic archival documents and understands the historical roots of the Ukrainian issue,” Artizov said.
The CPD emphasizes that the problem is not in reading the documents themselves, but in the way the Kremlin presents and interprets them. History in Russian propaganda has long since turned into a set of convenient myths rather than a science. “Propaganda presents history as a set of myths about a ‘one nation’, ‘artificial Ukraine’ and ‘historical territories,'” the Center for Combating Disinformation notes.
According to experts, this “interpretation” allows to create the illusion that the war is allegedly the result of some thousand-year-old processes. In fact, it is about the specific decisions of a specific person — Vladimir Putin, who unleashed a full-scale war.
The CPD emphasizes that the Kremlin is deliberately shifting the focus away from the real causes of aggression. Instead of talking about invasions, missiles, destroyed cities and killed civilians, Russians and the world are offered abstract considerations about “historical justice.” “The dictator derives from these fantasies the “root causes of the war”, which then serve as a justification for murders, destruction of cities, and suffering of peaceful Ukrainians,” the experts emphasize.
The Center for Combating Disinformation draws attention to the fact that such rhetoric is dangerous not only for Ukraine.
