Since yesterday, information has appeared in the mass media that the White House has given permission for the Armed Forces of Ukraine to strike the territory of Russia with long-range missiles. However, these data have not yet been officially confirmed, although the whole world is already discussing them.
The UA.News agency talked to military expert Oleg Starikov and got his opinion on this matter.
According to Starikov, this situation has several components. The permission to fire long-range missiles applies not only to the Russian-Ukrainian war, but also more broadly to the conflict between the Russian Federation and NATO. At least this is how it is interpreted in Moscow.
“We are taking within the framework of the Russian-Ukrainian war. My understanding is that if permission is granted, there are several components here. It is political, psychological and military. From a political point of view, this means that the NATO countries (specifically, the USA, Britain and France) are on our side and they are ready to… provide us with help. They were not afraid of the Russian Federation, they were not afraid that they would be declared parties to the conflict and so on. This is a political component,” says Starikov.
According to the expert, the psychological component is to demonstrate to the people of Ukraine that they are not abandoning us, we have allies.
“This will raise morale, it will show the population that the West will not abandon us and will continue to provide various assistance,” Starikov believes.
Finally, there is a third component, directly military. After all, the main task of the troops conducting combat operations in a specific direction is the elimination of logistics, ammunition, weapons depots, command posts, etc. That is, everything related to military infrastructure.
“In order for the enemy not to be able to squeeze us out of Kurshchyna, we will strike these objects with high-precision weapons… But the enemy will not sit and wait for us to strike them. Apparently, on the line of the intelligence services, on the diplomatic line, the ambassadors of these Western countries were summoned to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. And I think they were handed urgent notes there, and the notes stated something like an ultimatum. After all, publicly, as I see it, Russia did not react strongly (with permission – ed.). They said that we will continue to pursue the policy that Putin spoke about,” comments Starikov.
The expert believes that now we can expect to bring the nuclear forces of the Russian Federation into full combat readiness. And the situation has a chance to move towards escalation.
“Most likely, this attack on November 17 was an early demonstration of what the long-range weapons policy will lead to, what the response will be… This decision is a political success of Ukraine and its partners, it is a psychological success. But military success will be limited. For a great strategic success, you need 400-500 such missiles, for a tactical one – from 100 missiles,” Oleg Starikov summarized.
