Poland is considering the possibility of handing over the rest of its MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine already at the beginning of next year — approximately in January-February, if the parties agree on the details of the arrangements.
The General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces confirms that negotiations with Kyiv are ongoing, and the final decision is still under consideration by the country’s political leadership.
These are aircraft that have reached their planned service life and have actually exhausted the modernization potential of the Polish army.
Warsaw emphasizes that the transfer of the MiG-29 is considered as an element of NATO’s broader policy of supporting Ukraine and strengthening the security of the Alliance’s eastern flank.
The tasks of the fighter jets that will be decommissioned are to take over the more modern F-16 and Korean FA-50, which are already being delivered to the Polish Air Force. Thus, Poland seeks to simultaneously update its own fleet of combat aircraft and strengthen Ukrainian resistance to Russian aggression.
At the same time, the parties agree on a “compensation package” — Warsaw wants to get access to certain technologies in the field of drones and missiles from Ukraine.
The Polish General Staff explains that it is not only about formal compensation for the transferred equipment, but also about the joint development of the defense industry and new competencies.
For Kyiv, such cooperation can open up additional opportunities for joint projects and deeper integration with the defense sector of NATO countries.
It will be recalled that Poland was left out of the key London summit regarding Ukraine.
Also, Poland demands explanations from Ukraine regarding the saboteur, who was not declared an international wanted man.
