Yes, the report about the event came to the police around 3:30 p.m. from the on-duty local TCC. Investigative and operational teams of the State Police of the region and the Berdychiv district police department, explosives technicians and forensic experts worked on the spot.
Already at the scene of the accident, the police found a bag with an improvised explosive device filled with explosives made of metal balls and a mobile phone.
“Fortunately, it did not detonate. In addition, the law enforcement officers found a phone from which the video broadcast was probably made and other material evidence,” the police said in a statement.
A special police operation was immediately launched in the region to arrest the suspects. Law enforcement officers from neighboring regions were also notified about the search.
“In just a few hours, one of the suspects was detained in Zhytomyr – a 41-year-old man, previously convicted several times for illegal handling of drugs and theft, a native of the Donetsk region,” the police said.
Police officers on patrol detained him on a shuttle bus heading to Kyiv.
Later, the law enforcement officers found out that he was helped by a 23-year-old resident of Berdycheva, who came into the field of view of the law enforcement officers for drug crimes.
“It was she who handed over the explosive device to the man. She was searched and detained. According to the available information, accomplices organized a terrorist attack under the leadership of Russian curators,” the agency said.
After the meeting with the accomplice, according to the SBU, the attacker hid an explosive device in a bag and left it under the door of the TCC. Having moved to a “safe” distance, the terrorist detonated remotely using a mobile phone and a self-made electric detonator attached to the explosive.
“In order to report to the curator, the man installed a mobile phone in advance, hidden in a box opposite the TCC building, which broadcasted the detonation in real time. By coincidence, no one was injured as a result of the incident,” the special service noted.
The pre-trial investigation is being conducted by the investigators of the Security Service of Ukraine in the Zhytomyr region under part. 2 Art. 258 (Terrorist Act) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. Currently, the issue of selecting preventive measures for accomplices is being resolved. Such a crime is punishable by imprisonment for a term of 7 to 12 years.
