This delicate flower, known as the Ankara late bloomer (Colchicum ancyrense), usually appears closer to Christmas, but this time its bloom was already recorded in mid-December of the war year 2025.
Scientists emphasize that such an appearance is atypical for the region and may be a sign of deeper changes in natural processes.
Ivan Rusev, a doctor of biological sciences and an employee of the park, said that the “brandushka” is listed in the Red Book of Ukraine as a vulnerable species.
He has been observing this plant near Tatarbunar for more than three decades and notes that he has never recorded its “awakening” so early. According to the researcher, the usual period of flowering in these places falls on the Christmas holidays, so he calls the current case unique.
The range of “brandushka” in Odesa is narrowing every year – the plant is gradually disappearing from places where it used to occur en masse. Once it completely disappeared even from the territory of the national park, which seriously worried scientists.
Last year, the park administration applied to the Ministry of Environmental Protection for permission to transplant plants from non-protected areas to the “Tuzlovsk estuaries” in order to return the species to safer conditions.
