October 28 is Tuesday and the 1342nd day of the war in Ukraine.
On this day, believers honor the memory of the holy martyrs Terentius and Neonila.
They lived in the 3rd century, when the Roman Empire persecuted Christians. The couple together with their seven children did not betray their faith in Christ, for which they were brutally tortured. The history of this family became a symbol of courage, spiritual stability and boundless love for God.
People called this day Terentius day. They said: “Terentius has come – winter is sitting on his shoulders.”
According to beliefs, if the weather is warm and sunny on October 28, the winter will be mild, and if it is cloudy and windy, severe frosts and blizzards await. Frost in the morning promised snow in a week, and the birds that did not fly away foreshadowed the late winter.
Our ancestors avoided quarrels and insults on this day, because they believed that evil words bring coldness and misfortune to the house. They also did not borrow money – it was believed that together with them they “give away well-being”.
On October 28, Ukrainians celebrate the Liberation Day of Ukraine from fascist invaders. It was on this day in 1944 that the Soviet troops finally liberated the entire territory of the country from the Nazi invaders.
This date reminds of the high price of freedom, millions of dead and the indomitable spirit of the Ukrainian people. On Liberation Day, all soldiers who gave their lives for the Motherland and those who are currently defending its independence are remembered.
On this same day, several international events are celebrated around the world. Among them is Grandparents’ Day, designed to honor people of the older generation, bearers of wisdom and traditions.
Also celebrated is the International Day of Animation, which was started in 1960, when the French director Emile Reynaud first showed his animated film.
In addition, October 28 commemorates the World Day of Judo, a martial art created by the Japanese master Jigoro Kano, and the International Day of Creole Culture, which symbolizes the unity of peoples and the mixing of cultures.
Many outstanding Ukrainians were born on this day: kobzar Terentii Parkhomenko, teacher and poet Vyacheslav Lashchenko, writer Mike Johansen.
Their creativity and social activities have become an important part of the national cultural heritage. Finally, for those celebrating birthdays, this day is special for the names Arsen, George, Dmytro, Ivan, Maxim, Mykola, Stepan, Anna and Paraska.
As a reminder, on October 27, 2025, Ukraine will celebrate the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language.
Also, every year in the fall, Ukraine celebrates Motorist’s Day — a professional holiday for all those who drive.
