Tomorrow, October 27, the Orthodox celebrate the day of memory of the holy martyr Nestor.
Nestor the Chronicler lived in the second half of the 11th century and was probably a monk of the Kyiv-Pechersk Monastery, one of the most important spiritual centers of that time in Kyivan Rus.
He is known as the author or editor of “Tales of the Temporal Years” — a key chronicle source covering the period from the foundation of Russia to the beginning of the 12th century.
On the same day, the holy martyrs Capitolina and Herotiida are remembered. Capitolina, a rich woman from Caesarea Cappadocia, dedicated her life to prayer and gave away her property to the poor, freeing slaves. For refusing to worship idols, she was arrested and executed by order of Emperor Diocletian.
Her servant Herotiida, defending her mistress, threw a stone at the ruler, was beaten, but remained unharmed, and later was also executed by sword.
According to folk omens for October 27, heavy dew in the morning portends quick snow, strong wind portends early spring, and a dry day portends a warm winter.
Folk tradition forbids refusing help, lending money, and breaking promises made on October 27 on this day, as this can lead to serious consequences.
As a reminder, the Day of Motorists and Road Workers in Ukraine is celebrated every year on the last Sunday of October.
Also on October 24, 2025, the world celebrates the International Day of the United Nations, World Rib Day and World Champagne Day.
