The Commander-in-Chief of the Norwegian Armed Forces, General Eirik Kristoffersen, confirmed the kingdom’s intention to transfer training missions directly to the territory of Ukraine. Norway is currently consolidating efforts in Poland, where a large-scale training center was opened this fall Camp Jomsborg which became the largest Norwegian military camp abroad.

Kristoffersen said this in an interview with “Ukrinform” on December 22.

The general emphasized that training in eastern Poland is a strategic step to bring the instructors as close as possible to the combat zone, which allows to shorten the logistical path for Ukrainian cadets. Kristoffersen noted that the expansion of training at Camp Jomsborg is a preparatory phase: as soon as the security situation allows, personnel and programs will be moved to Ukraine to increase the effectiveness of interaction.

The Camp Jomsborg project is implemented within the framework of a multinational operation Legion where Norway is the leader. Northern European countries (Denmark, Sweden, Iceland), Baltic countries (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania) and Poland also joined the initiative. Both general military courses for new recruits and specialized modules for officers are held at the base of the camp, in particular on stress management, use of drones and countermeasures against electronic warfare systems.

One of the key features of the training, Kristoffersen called the two-way exchange of experience, because Norwegian officers adapt their tactical schemes based on real combat lessons brought by Ukrainian soldiers from the front. According to the Commander-in-Chief, this approach is critically important for the future security architecture of all of Europe.

Now Norway is consolidating the training of Ukrainian servicemen on the territory of Poland, near the border with Ukraine, concentrating training in the largest training camp, Jomsborg.

When Norway realized that it could not provide Ukraine with certain types of weapons on its own, it turned to the United States. The American side has adapted the Priority Needs of Ukraine (PURL) packages to provide the necessary assistance, Norwegian Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Kristoffersen said.
