New F-16 Squadron Formed in Ukraine with International Pilots

A new squadron of F-16 aircraft has been established in Ukraine, comprising pilots from Ukraine, the United States, and the Netherlands. This unit is tasked with defending Ukrainian airspace against ongoing threats from Russian missiles and drones.

Details about the squadron’s formation have emerged, indicating that it was created in recent weeks under strict confidentiality. The unit plays a crucial role in safeguarding the skies over Kyiv, which has been subjected to frequent attacks.

American pilots with extensive combat experience in Afghanistan are part of this squadron. One of these pilots recently participated in operations in the Middle East before joining the effort to protect Ukraine.

From the Netherlands, pilots trained in elite European air combat schools have joined the squadron, specializing in modern interception tactics and high-tech aerial warfare.

According to Intelligence Online, these Western veterans have signed temporary contracts that allow for six-month rotations, with the possibility of extension based on operational needs. They do not hold official ranks within the Ukrainian military hierarchy and are not listed in public staffing records.

The squadron is reportedly involved in daily missions to intercept Russian cruise missiles, such as the Kalibr and X-101, as well as the Geran-5 drones. F-16s are deployed for patrols, including nighttime operations, to enhance radar coverage and rapid response capabilities in the air.

Intelligence Online notes that the primary asset of these Western pilots lies in their experience with advanced equipment. This includes the Sniper targeting and reconnaissance pods, which are referred to as the “eyes” of the aircraft. This system enables pilots to detect targets at great distances and track fast-moving missiles and drones, even in complete darkness or through dense clouds.

While Ukrainian pilots have begun to familiarize themselves with this technology, the expertise of the American veterans remains invaluable.

Ukraine has formed a new F-16 squadron with pilots from the U.S. and the Netherlands to enhance its air defense capabilities against Russian threats. This unit is expected to play a vital role in intercepting missiles and drones while utilizing advanced technology.
