In Poland, the atmosphere is deteriorating for Ukrainians, who, after the peak of support at the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, are increasingly facing aggression and discrimination.
As The Guardian writes, the situation is fueled by political debates and the revival of historical images.
The incident in the city of Szczecin, when a stranger attacked a Ukrainian-speaking family, reflects the growing hostility. The victim, Valeriya Holkina, said that after the attack she started having panic attacks, and she forbade her daughter to speak Ukrainian in public. The attacker was sentenced to 14 months in prison.
Polls show that support for Ukrainian refugees in Poland has fallen from 94% in 2022 to 48% today, and support for Ukraine joining the EU has fallen from 85% to 35%. Experts attribute this to political change, misinformation and viral videos on the Internet.
Similar trends are observed in other European countries. Germany, for example, is discussing restrictions on the arrival of young Ukrainian men through draft laws regulating aid to refugees.
In Poland, right-wing populist Karol Nawrocki vetoed the government’s draft law on financial support for Ukrainians and proposed his own, tougher legislation, which was eventually adopted in a compromise form.
Polish “bounty hunters” caught a 32-year-old Ukrainian who was fleeing from justice for kidnapping and holding a woman hostage. The man was convicted back in 2019, but escaped and professionally hid.
The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi said that Ukraine can offer Poland cooperation in the field of defense against drones and security at sea.
