Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that Ukraine will not be able to maintain its independence without the support of the US and NATO, Frankfurter Allgemeine reports.
It is noted that Merkel emphasized the importance of the transatlantic partnership in today’s conditions.
“Only with the help of the USA and within the framework of NATO can it be achieved that Putin does not win the war, and Ukraine remains an independent state,” said the ex-politician.
Merkel also spoke about the newly elected US President Donald Trump, naming him “a special leader” who protects the interests of his country.
“We can’t change Donald Trump, but we can respond to him accordingly. Europe must unite its interests. The US would be unwise not to seek an ally in Europe. We are also a significant factor,” she added.
