Italy Prime Minister George Meloni said Ukraine should receive NATO security guarantees without actually accession to the military alliance.
She reported this on Thursday in the fields of the EU leaders summit in Brussels, Bloomberg reports.
According to Meloni, instead of sending peacekeeping forces to Ukraine, it is necessary to look for longer decisions.
She proposed to extend the effect of Article 5 of NATO on Ukraine-the principle of collective defense, which obliges the Member States to defend each other.
“It is not a full-fledged NATO membership, but it implies the spread of the Alliance’s protection to Ukraine, ”the Prime Minister emphasized.
The proposal was made against the backdrop of European leaders’ efforts to support Kiev, while the Presidential Administration Donald Trump insists on the end of the war as soon as possible. Last month, US Defense Minister Pete Hegset excluded Ukraine’s accession to NATO.
This is the first time that Meloni has so clearly expressed her position on this issue. However, experts believe that the initiative is unlikely to receive support from the US.
