Tomorrow, January 19, 2026, Orthodox Christians will honor the memory of Saint Macarius of Egypt, a legendary hermit whose exploits have inspired believers for thousands of years.

This day is known as “Makar’s Day” in the folk calendar, where the weather predicts the future. Believers pray to him for healing and family happiness.

Saint Macarius was born around 300 in the Egyptian village of Ptinapor in the family of priest Abraham and Sarah. From his youth, he grazed cattle, but after the early death of his wife and parents, he distributed his property to the poor and went away to the desert to an old hermit.

There, Macarius mastered strict asceticism — he fasted on bread with roots, wove baskets and prayed for hours, overcoming the temptations of the devil.

At the age of 40, he was ordained a priest and appointed abbot of the Scythian desert, where he became a mentor to hundreds of monks.

The desert was filled with ascetics who sought his wisdom – Macarius drew up the rules of monastic life and performed miracles.

He raised the dead to prove the truth of the resurrection and the innocence of the accused, and also healed the sick with the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Macarius lived for more than 90 years in caves, avoiding fame – twice he ran away from the crowds into the depths of the desert. His talks, instructions and messages are still a spiritual treasure for monks.

The saint died in 390, leaving a legacy of early monasticism that influenced the entire Church.

Let us remind you that February is the last month of winter, which will bring many festive dates to Ukrainians.

Also, on January 12, 2026, Orthodox believers will honor the memory of the holy martyr Tatyana of Rome, a symbol of indomitable faith.
