Today, on July 24, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the Holy Princes -Strastpians Boris and Gleb – the first canonized saints in Kievan Rus. Boris and Gleb (in Baptism Roman and David) were the younger sons of Prince Vladimir the Great and the native brothers of Yaroslav the Wise, Svyatopolk Okayanny and Svyatoslav. In 1015, after his father’s death, they were victims of the struggle for the Kiev throne.
Their father, Vladimir the Great, intended to convey power to one of the sons, but sudden death changed the course of history. The princely throne occupied Svyatopolk, despite the fact that Vladimir allegedly wanted to put another heir instead. Boris at this time returned from a campaign to the Pechenegs, at the same time he received the news of his father’s death. He was offered to go to Kiev to take away the throne from Svyatopolk, but Boris did not want to raise his weapon to his brother. Svyatopolk, on the contrary – sought full power and therefore ordered to kill Boris. He died on July 24, 1015, at that time Boris was 29 years old.
After a while, Svyatopolk, despite his warnings from Yaroslav, lured a 25-year-old Gleb to himself and also killed him. It happened when Gleb prayed for his father and brother. Soon the third brother – Svyatoslav. Only in 1019 Prince Yaroslav defeated Svyatopolk and stopped the bloody strife. Svyatopolk died in torment – he was struck by madness and paralysis.
Boris’s brother was buried in Vyshgorod, in St. Basil’s Church, and later the relics of Gleb were transferred there. The chronicles refer to the miracles of healing on their grave. Princes Boris and Gleb became the first canonized saints in Kievan Rus. They are called Passionate, as they were killed not for faith, but for the sake of peace and the fulfillment of the commandments of God.
