On December 5, the world celebrates International Volunteer Day, an annual event that honors people who help others for free.
This holiday was introduced by the UN General Assembly in 1985, seeking to draw attention to the importance of volunteering for society.
Since then, this day has become a symbol of solidarity, mutual assistance and civic responsibility at the international level.
In Ukraine, the volunteer movement received official recognition in 2003, when it was established at the state level by the relevant resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.
The document, published on the Official Portal of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, defined the basics of supporting and developing volunteerism in the country. Since then, citizens’ participation in volunteer initiatives began to be systematically integrated into state policy.
Volunteering in Ukraine acquired a special scale with the beginning of the Revolution of Dignity and the war in 2014, and after the full-scale invasion turned into a unique global phenomenon.
Ukrainian volunteers promptly respond to the most difficult challenges, often taking on tasks that official structures do not have time to close. Their activities became an integral part of the national resistance and support of the society in the conditions of the war.
Today, volunteers provide the army with necessary equipment — from weaving camouflage nets to purchasing high-tech equipment.
They organize fundraising, logistics, equipment repairs and supply of protective equipment for the military. Thanks to their initiative and perseverance, it is possible to quickly find solutions where time is of the essence.
