Intensified Russian Offensive Fails Amid Heavy Casualties

Between March 17 and March 20, 2026, Russian forces escalated their offensive operations across multiple fronts, resulting in fierce combat and significant losses. Despite deploying tens of thousands of troops, their attempts to breach Ukrainian defenses were met with failure, incurring catastrophic casualties.

According to General Syrsky, the intensity of Russian assaults increased during this four-day period. “The enemy attempted to break through our defensive lines on several strategic fronts. Intense fighting erupted along the entire combat line, with a total of 619 assault attempts made by the enemy,” he reported.

The primary focus of the Russian offensive was in the Pokrovsk and Oleksandrivka directions, which saw the highest number of attacks. Specifically, Russian forces launched 163 assaults in the Pokrovsk area and 96 in Oleksandrivka. The situation remained equally tense in the Kostiantynivka direction, where 84 assault attempts occurred, as well as in the Ocheretyn, Lyman, and Kupiansk areas, contributing to over 150 combat encounters in total.

Despite the considerable pressure and the mobilization of significant reserves, Russian command was unable to achieve its objectives. General Syrsky stated, “Thanks to the professional and coordinated actions of our troops, we were able to halt the enemy’s offensive operations on several fronts. While intense fighting continues in some areas, the enemy is now compelled to regroup its forces.”

Russian forces are reportedly attempting to reinforce their units and prepare for renewed attacks, banking on deteriorating weather conditions that they believe will reduce the effectiveness of Ukrainian aerial reconnaissance and hinder the operation of drones and artillery.

General Syrsky emphasized the severe losses suffered by Russian troops during this period, stating, “The command of the Russian military committed tens of thousands of soldiers to these ‘meat assaults,’ but the cost of this offensive attempt has proven catastrophic for the aggressor.” He noted that during the four days of intense assaults, the enemy lost over 6,090 personnel killed and wounded, with total losses for the week reaching approximately 8,710.

Ukrainian defense forces also destroyed a significant amount of enemy military equipment and weaponry. “We were prepared for an increase in the intensity of the Russian onslaught, so we made the necessary management decisions. Our troops received reinforcements and were equipped with military technology, weapons, and ammunition,” General Syrsky explained.

He further acknowledged the bravery and resilience of every soldier fulfilling their combat duties under challenging conditions, stating, “The successful repulsion of the enemy’s mass assaults was made possible primarily due to the courage and steadfastness of each warrior.”

As in previous conflicts, Ukrainian defenders have demonstrated their superiority on the battlefield. In certain areas, Ukrainian forces have seized the initiative and are conducting their own active operations using a strategy of active defense.

“I would like to thank the soldiers who have withstood the enemy’s pressure, maintained their positions, and continue to liberate Ukrainian land from invaders,” General Syrsky concluded.

The recent escalation of Russian military offensives has resulted in significant casualties and failed attempts to breach Ukrainian defenses. General Syrsky reported that Ukrainian forces successfully repelled numerous assaults, demonstrating their operational resilience.
