Servicemen of the 15th Separate Brigade of Artillery Intelligence The Black Forest recreated the composition of the historical photo of the Easter celebration of the UPA in 1944 in the forestry of the Carpathian region with the same name, the Black Forest. The representatives of the brigade told NV.
The intelligence officers have long been carrying out the plan of communication to touch the past and to combine the modern defense of Ukraine from the northern aggressor with the UPA struggle. The brigade was sought in historical texts and photos of a way to embody this idea.
“We are those who continue their (UPA soldiers – ed.) Fighting. And no matter how the times or military uniform change, the essence remains the same – to fight for independent Ukraine, ”says the head of the communications department of the brigade Captain Andriy Solovey.
Easter has always been of great symbolic importance for the rebel leaders, playing a significant role in the moral uplift and spiritual education of soldiers. According to historians, the oath of the UPA soldier for the first time was made on Easter in 1943.
These historical photos of the communicators of the brigade came across a long time, and in 2025 they were able to organize a reconstruction of events.
“The main idea of the UPA struggle was the creation of an independent united Ukrainian state, which should contain all ethnic Ukrainian lands. Their contribution to our struggle for independence is invaluable. This is our landmark today. Now the enemy has not changed, ”said Captain Solovey.
Even at the underground celebration of Easter in the forests, the rebels tried to invite the priest. But, because of the danger of the NKVD’s raid, the Father’s preaching was often replaced by a field commander with his speech.
It is then that the religious greeting “Christ is risen! Truly risen! ” Patriotic color – “Christ is risen! Sunday Ukraine! ”. Subsequently, it dispersed the cells and began to be actively used in the rebels.

Historical chronicles also say that the celebrations were performed among civilians as possible, combining with agitation work.
According to historians, Easter for UPA fighters was a symbol of the beginning of the new year of struggle and the end of the period of heavy and hungry wintering in Kryivki.
The 15th Separate Brigade of Artillery Intelligence The Black Forest was formed on March 14, 2022. Its name is inspired by the memory of the tactical shade of UPA No. 22 (Stanislavsky) The Black Forest, which was organizationally part of the Military District of Hoverl, and was part of the UPA-West operational group. It is in the west of Ukraine, in the city of Drohobych, that the point of permanent deployment of the 15th election is now based.
