“Today in Zaporizhzhia they visited a newly built underground school. This is already the second such educational institution in the city. The anti-radiation shelter can accommodate up to a thousand people. They built it as quickly as possible. We expect that there will be more and more such projects,” Shmyhal noted.
Safe education is a key priority, so next year the government will continue this work so that as many children as possible in all regions of Ukraine can study safely.
The Prime Minister noted that more than UAH 1 billion was allocated for the construction and arrangement of shelters in schools for the Zaporizhzhia region, and in general, the government allocated UAH 7.5 billion for creating safe conditions in educational institutions and building shelters. This is one of the largest investment programs in the budget.
Ivan Fedorov, the head of Zaporizhzhia OVA, clarified that the second underground school in Zaporizhzhia is designed for 1,000 students.
“On the eve of the New Year, the Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal and the Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine Oksen Lisovyi came to Zaporizhzhia. Together, we made a unique gift for 1,000 children of the front-line regional center – another safe and modern “underground school” of the Zaporizhzhia region,” the message reads.
Secretary of the Zaporizhia City Council, Regina Kharchenko, in her turn noted that a safe learning space was built in the Zaporizhia Gymnasium No. 107, taking into account all safety and comfort standards.
“The school is unique due to its location and constructive solutions. Erected on sandy soil, the building received a strong pile foundation. This affected the cost and terms of construction, and thanks to this, the structure turned out to be extremely stable,” Kharchenko said.
You can get to the shelter directly from a regular school through a tunnel, and the facility has modern engineering networks, high-quality ventilation and fire protection systems, gas control sensors, smoke protection, video surveillance, necessary furniture and interactive equipment for training. All this was purchased thanks to cooperation with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). A special lifting platform is also installed there.
It will be recalled that in October, the construction of another “underground school” began in the Zaporizhzhia region. This will be the eighth educational institution of this type.
And in the Kharkiv region, six underground schools are under construction, and another 16 such projects are under development.
