In Ukraine, a new state holiday was introduced – the Day of International Harmony

“I met with representatives of the national communities and indigenous peoples of Ukraine. I am grateful to everyone for the unity in the defense of our state and our common independence in the war, at the front, where there are representatives of all our peoples – all communities of Ukraine. I am grateful for the internal peace in Ukraine that characterizes helps our state to survive at this time,” Zelenskyy wrote.

During the meeting, the head of state announced the introduction of a new public holiday.

“Every year, May 21 will be the Day of International Harmony and Cultural Diversity. It’s not only yours… I think it’s important for all of Ukraine, but it’s your day to emphasize what we in Ukraine have and will definitely preserve our ability to be together, together for independent Ukrainians,” Zelenskyi said.

“For the purpose of strengthening the unity and harmony of the Ukrainian people, establishing the Ukrainian national and civil identity, promoting the free development of the cultural diversity of the indigenous peoples and national minorities (communities) of Ukraine, certifying respect for their contribution to the defense of the state sovereignty and independence of Ukraine, to the armed struggle against the state -aggressor” the president decided to introduce the Day of International Harmony and Cultural Diversity in Ukraine, which is celebrated annually on May 21.

The corresponding decree No. 883/2024 was signed on December 27.

“The purpose of this holiday is to unify Ukrainian society, protect the rights of national minorities and indigenous peoples of Ukraine, as well as to honor their contribution to the ethno-cultural wealth of our country,” declared the DESS.

On May 21, the world celebrates an international holiday – the World Day of Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, which promotes the promotion of issues of cultural diversity. The holiday provides an opportunity to help communities understand the value of each culture and learn to live together in harmony and was created as a result of the destruction of the Bamiyan Buddha statues in Afghanistan in 2001.
