In Ukraine, law enforcement officers initiated criminal proceedings against Russian politician Leonid Volkov due to systemic insults directed at Ukrainian defenders and justification of Russia’s actions.
This is reported by “Glavkom” with reference to data from the Unified Register of Pretrial Investigations.
According to data from the registry, the reason for opening the case was the publicized private archive of correspondence between the associate Oleksiy Navalny and his former colleague at FBK Anna Tiron. In his messages, Volkov resorted to high-handed rhetoric, humiliated the leadership of the Main Intelligence Directorate and questioned the territorial integrity of Ukraine, which became the basis for accusations under articles of encroachment on state sovereignty and calls for an aggressive war on the part of Russia.
The case materials indicate that Leonid Volkov, despite his status as an oppositionist, broadcast theses in closed discussions that completely coincide with the official narratives spread by Russia. In particular, law enforcement officers are investigating the facts of his statements regarding the justification of missile strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure and discrediting the military operations of the Defense Forces. This scandal caused a significant resonance in Ukrainian society, because for a long time a part of the Russian opposition in Europe was perceived as an ally in the fight against the regime, while the real views of some of its representatives turned out to be hostile to Ukraine.
Currently, Ukrainian investigators are preparing the necessary documents for notifying Volkov of suspicion and possibly declaring him an international wanted person through Interpol. Lawyers emphasize that the status of a foreign politician who is under the protection of European countries does not exempt him from responsibility for crimes against the national security of Ukraine. This case may become a precedent for a review of relations between the Ukrainian state and Russian political émigrés, who, being safe, continue to support the aggressive aspirations shown by Russia.
In particular, Volkov:
- called the former head of the Main Directorate of Intelligence, Kyril Budanov, a “despicable rural political technologist” and Ukrainian servicemen “Nazis”;
- stated that Ukrainian figures Andriy Yermak, Mykhailo Podolyak and the same Budanov should be in prison;
- justified the actions of the Russian Federation since 2014.
We will remind that the Special Service of Lithuania reacted to Volkov’s statements about “Nazis” in Ukraine.
In addition, the migration service of Lithuania will consider the issue of the further stay in the country of the representative of the Russian opposition, Leonid Volkov, after his statements in which he called the Ukrainian military and officials “Nazis”.
