The local administration of Zhytomyr region studies the prospect of restoration and commissioning after the end of the war of the International Airport “Zhytomyr”. This transport node remained unused between 1990 and 2014.
This was stated by the Chairman of the Committee on Organization of State Authorities, Local Self -Government, Regional Development and Urban Planning, the chairman of the Servant of the People’s party Elena Shuliak.
This will create an alternative to Boryspil and Zhulyany International Airports, as well as to offer favorable conditions for low costs by airlines due to its discount rates and fees and a reduction in flight time.
According to her, the airlines have repeatedly declared their willingness to come to Ukraine after the end of the war. The airport in Zhytomyr can also be considered in the future as one of the centers where freight will be carried out. At the same time, the investment in its launch is about $ 20 million, but local authorities sees the opportunity to raise these funds from several sources.
Zhytomyr region recently presented a program of complex restoration, which covers all spheres of life of the region, analysis of its advantages, as well as a list of steps necessary to implement them as best when reconstructed on the principle of “building better than it was”. Local authorities see the restoration of Zhytomyr Airport as one of the priority areas of realization of the transport potential of Zhytomyr region.
Zhytomyr Airport named after Sergiy Korolev was founded in 1937. In the period from 1990 to 2014, the airport was not used, although it has all the necessary infrastructure to serve air transportation.
One of the main reasons why the airport was not used before the war was the unsatisfactory state of its take-off and more. Therefore, local self -government bodies of Zhytomyr region, explained Shuliak, have a detailed plan for both it and in general for the repair and modernization of the airport.
“The OMS has written all the necessary steps in the program of complex restoration – extension and expansion of the runway, installation of the necessary equipment in the airport itself, repair of the platform and in front of the hangar territory, completion existing hotel, etc. », – said the chairman of the Committee of Local Self -Government and Regional development.
She added that the local authorities make very clear arguments in favor of the airport. Thus, the most promising area of development of its passenger and cargo segments is the creation of an alternative to international airports “Boryspil” and “Zhulyany”.
The most important advantage of Zhytomyr Airport in the context of passenger transportation is its small distance from the capital of Ukraine – the city of Kiev. It is the only private airport in Ukraine to avoid state regulation of airport prices and thus offer favorable offers to airlines.
“Budget airlines, convinced by the local authorities, will be able to opt for Zhytomyr Airport due to its discount rates and fees and reduction of flight time. Discounts for aviation services that will be offered for airlines will contribute to the formation of a lower flight cost through Zhytomyr Airport and will, accordingly, provide an advantage for passenger tickets. Free transportation of passengers from Zhytomyr metro station can be a significant advantage in the fight for the consumer. The commissioning of the Zhytomyr airport will reduce the distance to be overcome by residents of regional centers to the nearest airport, ”Olena Shuliak added.
Zhytomyr International Airport can also be considered in the future as one of the centers where freight will be carried out. It has a great advantage as a future center of cargo transportation due to the location near the E40 (Kiev-Lviv), availability of cheap warehouses.
