Dnipro Polytechnic, headed by rector Oleksandr Azyukovsky, in interview with RBC-Ukraine claims that their institution does not have a problem with a lack of applicants, despite the general trends in Ukraine.

He explains that the university itself forms the demand for educational programs, because it offers specialties that meet the needs of the market, such as mining, oil and gas technologies, cyber security and others.

Azyukovsky also notes that underselection of students is not always a correct indicator, as the institution is actively working to improve the quality of education at all levels. He debunks myths about the complexity of technical disciplines, arguing that humanities studies also require considerable effort.

“We don’t have a shortage. It’s unknown to us. Why? Because it’s a market. We have to provide quality services for everyone. You can determine how many people will come to certain specialties. But we’ll spend more on it than we’ll get,” Azyukovsky said.

At the same time, Oleksandr Azyukovskyi named the majors most often studied.

“This is mining and oil and gas technology. This is our conscious choice, our marketing is targeted at these specialties. Also – cyber security and information protection, road transport, construction and civil engineering, software engineering, economics and international relations, marketing, computer science, philology and management. These are conditional top ten specialties,” he explained.

Oleksandr Azyukovsky also emphasized that the university actively destroys the stereotype that mathematics is difficult, and humanities are easy. According to him, philology and pedagogy are the same science-intensive fields as technical disciplines.

“When we upgraded our media component, we invited journalists and TV presenters to the university. They advised us on how to submit materials. And I was shocked at how difficult the complex universe of journalism is, there are many nuances,” the head of the university noted.

He added that technical and humanitarian knowledge are inextricably linked, because any engineering project ultimately ends with the creation of documentation. There, verified terms and deep knowledge of the language are necessary, without which no technology can work effectively.

“One simply does not exist without the other,” concluded Oleksandr Azyukovsky.

In the conditions when there is a shortage of specialists in labor professions in Ukraine, the successes of the Dnipro Polytechnic can serve as an example for other educational institutions.
