In the temporarily occupied Crimea, social tension is increasing due to economic pressure from the occupying “power”. Market entrepreneurs in the village of Kurman (formerly Krasnogvardiyske) staged an open protest against the sharp increase in rent, which, according to them, is depriving people of their means of livelihood.

Local residents, who believed Russian propaganda 11 years ago, now publicly compare the current situation with the period before the occupation, declaring a complete collapse of economic expectations.

Among the main theses of the protesters is the lack of employment opportunities. People directly say: “Ukraine provided jobs, but under Russia they were left without work.” According to entrepreneurs, the actions of the occupation administration actually discredit the Russian Federation itself in the eyes of the local population.

A significant part of those working in the market are people aged 40 to 60 years. They emphasize that in case of closing of shops due to exorbitant rent, it is almost impossible to find a new job at this age on the peninsula.

The entrepreneurs recorded a video appeal to the so-called “head of the republic” Serhii Aksyonov and the occupation prosecutor’s office, accusing the local administration of undermining trust in the “authority”.

In the appeal, people emotionally declare: “Did we vote for Russia in order for it to leave us without means of livelihood? Look, here 300 people remain in their old age with nothing. Where should we go?”.

Experts note that the increase in rental rates and various fees on the occupied peninsula may be related to the budget deficit of the Russian Federation, a large part of which is used to finance the war against Ukraine. As a result, it is Crimean entrepreneurs who are forced to compensate for these costs, which further exacerbates the socio-economic situation in the region.

We will remind you that on January 20, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) passed a decision in the case “Bekirov and others v. Russia”, which concerns the violation of the right to peaceful assembly in relation to 43 applicants who lived in Crimea at the time of the events.

Formerly the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) passed unprecedented decisions in two cases concerning claims of Ukraine against Russia.
