In Lviv, a Ukrainian-American team of doctors successfully performed an open rhinoseptoplasty on a 15-year-old girl with the rare Goldenhar syndrome. A rib and ear graft was used to form a new nose. It is reported Christian Medical Association.
Lisa was born with Goldenhar syndrome, a rare developmental defect that affects the ears, eyes and spine. The girl had a missing right auricle, a bilateral cleft lip and palate, and a deformed nose.
Starting from 3 months, doctors of the 7th Children’s Hospital of Kyiv performed staged operations: reconstruction of lips, hard and soft palate. At the end of 2024, Liza underwent otoplasty in Lviv — cartilage was taken from a rib to form the auricle.
In early December 2025, as part of the 11th Reconstruction Mission, the girl was offered the next stage of treatment — open rhinoseptoplasty.
“Lisa had a serious deformity of the nose with impaired breathing. Due to the lack of cartilage, we had to take a rib and ear graft to form a new nose. The operation lasted about 7 hours. But we are very satisfied with the result,” says maxillofacial surgeon Khrystyna Pogranichna.
The girl shares her own feelings: “It is difficult for me to leave after the operation, but after each subsequent one I feel more confident. My relatives support me the most, and also the thought that in time I will be able to be like everyone else.” Lisa’s mother adds: “I am supported by the fact that we are moving towards our goal. We know what it’s all for.”
About her future plans, the girl says: “After the 9th grade, I plan to enter a medical college. If I like it, I will continue my studies. I want to be a maxillofacial and plastic surgeon, like the doctors who treated me. I know that this is a very difficult path. But after everything I’ve been through, I fell in love with the hospital and feel at home there,” Lisa says.
Goldenhar syndrome is a rare developmental defect manifested by facial asymmetry, underdevelopment of the jaws, hearing and vision defects. Some children may have abnormalities of the heart, kidneys, or central nervous system.
