NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte positively reacted to US President Donald Trump’s statement on possible new sanctions against Russia.
Rutte said this on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos in a comment to CNBC.
“I was very, very pleased with Trump’s stance on additional sanctions against Russia,” Rutte said, adding that they knew the Russian economy was in very bad shape.
NATO Secretary General also expressed hope that Europe will strengthen sanctions restrictions so that “strangle the Russian economy” and reduce Moscow’s military spending.

“Trump is right that Ukraine is closer to Europe. But Trump is also right that this is a geopolitical conflict, so I’m sure the US wants it to end with a good and strong deal,” CNBC quoted Mark Rutte as saying.
Rutte emphasized that the result of any peace agreement must be “stable”. Otherwise, Russia’s allies, including China and North Korea, will “high-five.”
The new US President Donald Trump wrote on his Truth Social account on Wednesday, January 22, that he will be forced to impose high tariffs and sanctions on Russian goods if the aggressor country does not stop the war.
“With all of this in mind, I want to do Russia, whose economy is collapsing, and President Putin a very big favor. Make a deal now and end this senseless war! IT WILL ONLY GET WORSE. If we don’t make a ‘deal’, and soon, I will have no choice but to impose high tariffs, tariffs and sanctions on everything Russia sells to the United States and other involved countries,” Trump wrote.
For his part, Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Serhii Ryabkov said that the terrorist country sees “a small window of opportunity” for agreements with the new administration of the US president.
Before that, Putin stated that he wanted from the USA “dialogue on an equal and mutually respectful basis”.
