President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on the leaders of the European Union “not to hug Putin”, as well as the USA and Europe not to lose touch with each other.
He stated this during an address at the summit of the European Political Community in Budapest.
Zelensky reminded that the day before he and other heads of state had a conversation with the newly elected US President Donald Trump. “It was a good, productive conversation. Of course, we cannot yet know exactly what his specific actions will be. But we hope that America will become stronger. This is the kind of America Europe needs, and a strong Europe is what America needs. This is the bond between allies that should be valued and cannot be lost,” the president said.
Zelensky also called on European leaders to reject the illusion that a just peace can be achieved through concessions. “We don’t need support in negotiations, but a sufficient number of weapons. Hugging Putin will not help. Some of you have been embracing it for 20 years and it’s only getting worse. He only thinks about wars and will not change. It can only be restrained by pressure,” he emphasized.
The president also called for finding a mechanism to direct funds from Russian assets to Ukraine so that they start working as soon as possible. He emphasized the importance of using leverage on Russia and uniting to protect the common interests of European nations.
We previously wrote that the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, arrived in Budapest on November 7.
We will also remind you that the newly elected President Donald Trump is a strong leader. Elections to the US Congress inspire “optimism” regarding support for Ukraine.
