The new introductory campaign is approaching in Ukraine, and the issue of choosing a profession is again relevant for thousands of students and their parents.

The Ministry of Education and Science emphasize – the most common mistake is the focus only on “prestige”, advice of acquaintances or the desire of parents.

According to Deputy Minister of Education and Science Mikhail Vinnytsky, most graduates at the age of 17 have a clear idea of what they want to do all their lives, and decisions are often made under the influence of stereotypes and external pressure.

Vinnytsky emphasized that popular specialties, such as “right”, “management” or “finance”, do not actually guarantee easy employment. There is a minimum number of vacancies in the labor market for graduates of these areas, so the choice of such specialties is often unjustified.

The same category includes journalism, as well as all areas related to business administration and so-called “situation” specialties.

To remedy the situation, the state introduced a mechanism of “indicative cost”. From now on, the price of contract training in popular but unpromising specialties has increased significantly.

This should stimulate the entrants to choose the professions that are really in demand in the Ukrainian labor market, not to follow the fashion or advice of the environment.

Additionally, it is worth noting that the number of graduates in Ukraine is decreasing every year. In 2025, only 312 thousand students were registered for the national multi -compartment test, while in 2008 there were 630 thousand.

Every year the country loses about 20-30 thousand potential entrants. This creates additional challenges for the education system and the labor market.

We will remind, the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine announced the intention to expand the program of free meals in schools, including students of 5th and 6th grade students.

We also reported that Ukraine will not close high schools and elementary schools in Ukraine in connection with the reform of the high school “profile”.
