The EU plans to connect the capitals of Germany and Ukraine with a high-speed railway. The connection between Berlin and Kyiv will be established by 2040. But an intermediate stage is foreseen. This is a high-speed rail connection from Berlin to Warsaw, and it will be launched by 2030.
This was announced by the new European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tsitsikostas. He noted that the launch of the high-speed railway connection will be implemented as part of the next stage of development of the Trans-European transport network TEN-T.
“I will make sure that this is a priority, so that this network develops. I will cooperate very closely with Germany, Poland, and Ukraine,” he said.
Tsitsikostas said that the expansion of railway connections with the EU is very important for Ukraine. This will reduce the country’s dependence on road freight transportation. Also, the railway connection will facilitate the movement of citizens between the countries of the European Union and Ukraine.
However, there are some problems. They relate to increasing the speed of railway traffic on the Ukrainian side. But the same problems are observed in some eastern EU countries. Therefore, they will be actively resolved.
As a reminder, next year Ukrzaliznytsia and the Spanish railway infrastructure operator Adif will start a project of an automatic track width change system for 1520 mm, 1435 mm and 1668 mm.
Earlier, Ukrzaliznytsia scheduled additional flights from the capital to Odesa and Lviv.
Ukrzaliznytsia also changed some routes between Odesa and Kyiv, adding new transfers. The reason was repair work in the Cherkasy region.
