In 2024, the greenhouse gas emissions increased by 30%in 2024, and the total climatic price of the Russian invasion reached 230 million tons of CO₂ since February 2022.

This was stated by a representative of Ukraine in an intergovernmental group of climate change experts (MHEZK) Svetlana Krakowska.

According to a study of the initiative to account for greenhouse gas emissions from the war of Russia, the responsibility of the Russian Federation for these emissions is estimated at $ 42 billion. Experts used the “social price of carbon” for the calculation – $ 185 per tonne CO₂.

Krakowska stressed that humanity’s dependence on fossil fuels is not only the main cause of the climatic crisis, but also the source of wars.

Earlier, we wrote that the damage to the environment of Ukraine from Russian aggression has already exceeded $ 70 billion. 3 million hectares of forests were destroyed, more than 6500 environmental crimes were recorded, and the CO₂ emissions reached 180 million tons.
