Germany intends to take an active part in ensuring the security of Greenland, but all actions must be coordinated with the Danish side and other coastal NATO member states to effectively counter threats from the Russian Federation.
As RBC-Ukraine reports, this was stated by Federal Minister of Defense of Germany Boris Pistorius during a joint press conference with EU High Representative Kaya Callas on Tuesday in Berlin.
He emphasized that the Arctic needs comprehensive protection due to the growing hegemonic ambitions of Russia, which is actively remilitarizing the region. According to the minister, the security of the North Atlantic is a common issue of NATO and Europe, and not only the interest of the United States, so the allies are studying the feasibility of introducing special missions under the auspices of the Alliance to monitor air, surface and underwater space.
The proposed measures include regular military exercises, reconnaissance and patrolling of vast areas of Greenland, which, due to the low population density, are difficult to protect with a physical military presence alone. Boris Pistorius emphasized that more than a year ago, Germany concluded a maritime security partnership with Norway, Denmark and Canada, which is a recognition of the strategic importance of the northern routes. Since Greenland belongs to Denmark, all future steps to monitor and strengthen defenses will be coordinated with the Danish side and other coastal NATO member states to effectively counter threats from Russia.
The German minister’s statement came amid general concern among European countries about the vulnerability of critical infrastructure in the Arctic and North Atlantic, including submarine communication cables and power grids. Kaya Kallas supported the initiative, noting that the EU is also interested in the stability of the region, which is becoming increasingly accessible to shipping due to climate change. Alliance allies plan to complete a needs assessment in Greenland in the near future to demonstrate readiness to defend the northern flank against any destabilization attempts.
