German Ambassador to Ukraine Heiko Toms confirmed the transfer of nine modern IRIS-T air defense systems and announced the delivery of new systems.
Toms said this in an interview with the Society on January 28, 2026.
The diplomat emphasized that Berlin remains Kyiv’s biggest partner in strengthening air defense, but acknowledged the insufficiency of the available number of means for full protection of the sky. The arrival of additional IRIS-T fire units is expected in the near future, which is part of Ukraine’s large-scale order for 18 such systems from the manufacturer Diehl Defense.
In addition to the medium- and short-range systems, at the end of 2025, Germany strengthened Ukrainian defenses with two additional Patriot batteries. Hajko Toms noted that he personally observes the situation in Kyiv and understands the critical need for ammunition and new installations for the protection of the civilian population and energy. In total, during the full-scale invasion, Germany already transferred five Patriot systems to Ukraine, which is more than a third of the Bundeswehr’s own arsenal.
Despite the depletion of its own Patriot stockpile, Germany continues the uninterrupted production and supply of IRIS-T systems, which demonstrate high effectiveness against Russian cruise missiles and drones. Plans for 2026 also include the transfer of a significant number of AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles and further financing of defense purchases through international mechanisms. The ambassador assured that support for Ukraine remains a priority of the German government, and the total amount of aid this year should reach a record 11.5 billion euros.
In December 2025, Germany completed the transfer of the ninth IRIS-T anti-aircraft missile complex to Ukraine, which significantly strengthens the anti-aircraft defense of the country .
Ukraine officially ordered 18 IRIS-T air defense systems from the German company Diehl Defense.
