Germany Secures PAC-3 Missiles for Ukraine Amid Ongoing Conflict

Germany has coordinated with its allies to supply Ukraine with PAC-3 missiles, which are currently en route. However, experts caution that this assistance will have limited impact on the ongoing conflict, as the missiles are expected to last only about two weeks.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced the procurement of approximately 30 advanced PAC-3 guided missiles from several European nations. Additionally, the German Armed Forces will contribute a few more missiles, bringing the total to 35 interceptors for Ukraine.

The German Ministry of Defense has confirmed the delivery, stating that Ukraine can anticipate receiving the missiles in the coming weeks.

Despite this support, reports indicate that Ukrainian forces utilize an average of 60 Patriot missiles each month. Therefore, this latest package will only suffice for about half a month.

A representative from the German defense ministry emphasized that the shipment includes not only the urgently needed PAC-3 missiles but also additional air defense systems. “In addition to the current package, Germany will provide Ukraine with further anti-aircraft weapons, including MANPADS, AIM-9 guided missiles, and IRIS-T systems, along with spare parts for the Patriot and IRIS-T systems,” he stated.

In February, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted a critical shortage of PAC-3 interceptors for the Patriot systems, which left Ukrainian defenses unable to counter ballistic strikes from Russia in the previous month.

Germany's recent procurement of PAC-3 missiles for Ukraine represents a significant, yet limited, military aid effort. With only enough missiles to last two weeks, the ongoing need for additional support remains critical as Ukraine continues to face substantial threats.
