The German Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection has officially introduced a new export mechanism dubbed the “green corridor” for air and naval defense systems. This initiative allows Ukraine and six Gulf nations to receive German weapons without the lengthy approval process previously required for each individual request.
Approved by Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s government, this decision aims to eliminate a significant bottleneck in Germany’s defense export procedures. Previously, companies like Rheinmetall and Diehl Defence needed individual permits for every component of air defense systems, causing critical delays in deliveries.
The newly established temporary mechanism, effective until September 15, 2026, introduces a general export license. This change facilitates:
-
Speed: Manufacturers can now finalize contracts and ship equipment almost instantly.
-
Predictability: Germany’s partners can plan their defense strategies without the fear of sudden vetoes on spare parts shipments.
-
Priority for Air Defense: The streamlined process primarily focuses on air defense systems and maritime security equipment.
This privileged export regime extends to Ukraine, a key European ally, as well as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman. The selection of these countries is strategic, as it enables a quicker response to shared threats, particularly drone attacks and missile terror affecting both Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure in the Gulf region.
Germany maintains oversight on these exports, ensuring compliance with EU legislation while shifting the focus from bureaucratic processes to tangible outcomes—namely, the safety of its partners. This move is expected to significantly enhance Ukraine’s ability to rapidly increase its stock of IRIS-T systems and related equipment, which are vital amid ongoing aerial assaults.
Germany has launched a 'green corridor' for defense exports, allowing Ukraine and Gulf states to receive military equipment more efficiently. This initiative aims to streamline the approval process, enhancing defense capabilities amid ongoing threats.
