Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, at least 60-100 thousand Ukrainian soldiers may have died, another 400 thousand were seriously wounded and are no longer able to fight, writes The Economist with reference to intelligence reports, analysts and officials.
The publication emphasizes that the figures are very difficult to verify independently. The estimates are based on leaked or published intelligence reports from intelligence agencies, Defense Department officials, researchers, and open-source intelligence.

These losses probably do not include missing soldiers, The Economist points out.
Analysts also refer to data from the UA loss site, which claims that at least 60,435 Ukrainian soldiers have died since February 24, 2022. According to estimates, more than 0.5% of the pre-war population of Ukraine were men of fighting age (18-49 years old) was killed as a result of the invasion of the Russian Federation.
At the same time, The Economist does not consider these data exhaustive and suggests that the real numbers are even higher.
“If we assume that six to eight Ukrainian soldiers are seriously wounded for every one killed in battle, then almost one in twenty men of fighting age die or are too wounded to continue fighting,” the article says.
As for the losses of the troops of the aggressor country, according to the estimate of The Economist, published in July 2024, about 106-140 thousand Russian occupiers died.
