Shortly after the snowfall in Ukraine, a sharp cooling is expected due to the invasion of arctic air.

According to forecasters, on Thursday and Friday, January 8 and 9, worsening weather conditions will be observed in the western, northern, Vinnytsia and Cherkasy regions, where snowfall, strong wind, and snowdrifts are possible.

Nataliya Ptuha, forecaster of the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, told about this in the commentary of RBC-Ukraine.

“These days we are expecting rather difficult weather conditions in the western, northern, Vinnytsia and Cherkasy regions,” the forecaster shared.

She explained that in the western, Vinnytsia and Zhytomyr regions is expected:

  • heavy snow;

  • increase in snow cover from 10 to 25 cm.

Besides, the passage of a cyclone with atmospheric fronts will be accompanied by gusts of wind in some places (in the western regions, its speed can be 15-18 m/s).

“When the wind combines with precipitation (and our precipitation is in the form of snow), respectively snow drifts and snow drifts may form in some places. In these regions, we pay attention to this,” said Ptuha.

At the same time, she reminded that a cyclone is “such a baric formation that consists of a warm and cold air mass (it is their interaction that produces precipitation).”

“And when it’s winter, then precipitation – of different phases. This is exactly the situation we will have (today and tomorrow, – Ed .) on the territory of Ukraine. If the west is in a cold air mass with snow (there will be a stable minus), then in the Chernihiv and Kyiv regions significant snow and sleet is already expected. This is already a more mixed phase of precipitation,” the expert said.

According to the information provided by her, increase in snow cover can also be up to 15 centimeters. In the north of the regions – maybe up to 20 cm.

“But it will already be more of such a “heavy” snow. In some places – it may turn into rain. And, accordingly, there may be such phenomena as icicle and icicle. Plus more sticking wet snow maybe”, – noted the representative of UkrHMC.

According to her, this especially applies to the Kyiv, Chernihiv, Sumy and Cherkasy regions. Since these areas “will be on the verge of meeting”:

  • cold – from the northwest;

  • warm – from the southeast.

“It is this limit, it can be quite narrow. But these dangerous phenomena, especially ice (formation of an ice crust on surfaces, wires, branches, of course on the coating, where cars drive, people walk) – will pose a certain danger,” Ptukha stated.

Based on this, she advised citizens to carefully follow the warnings from the Ukrhydrometeorological center and its regional centers – “exactly where, when and with what intensity these meteorological phenomena are expected” (because their spectrum is quite large).

The expert reminded that ice forms when there is warm air above and cold air below.

“Accordingly, precipitation begins at a height in the liquid phase (because warm air is always lighter if it comes into contact with cold)… And when precipitation reaches the surface, the ground, and here the temperature is below zero, it can freeze,” the specialist explained.

She added that during the day there can be “shifting” – “snow, sleet, even rain sometimes it can”.

“It is quite a difficult situation. We will have to carefully follow the trajectory of this cyclone,” Ptukha admitted.

Meanwhile, tomorrow On January 9, the cyclone “will move in a northeasterly direction”.

“However, we still have precipitation in the north, west, and partly in the center,” the forecaster noted.

It is mainly about precipitation in the form of snow.

“There may be additional strengthening of the wind. Maybe there will be separate blizzards… Our specialists will specify in which regions,” added the representative of UkrHMC.

The bird reported that after this cyclone moves away from us in the north-eastern direction, it will become significantly colder in Ukraine.

January 10-11 (during weekends, – Ed .) we will already have an invasion of arctic air from northern latitudes,” she said.

Given this, it is expected temperature drop to 14-20 degrees of frost:

  • in the western regions;

  • in the northern regions;

  • in Vinnytsia region;

  • in the Cherkasy region.

In some places – even up to -23 (degrees Celsius, – Ed .)”, the forecaster emphasized.

She clarified that during the day the air temperature will be in the range of 9-15 degrees below zero.

“Kirovohrad, Poltava regions – there will be less intense frost at night and during the day – 6-12 degrees (below zero, – Ed .),” remarked the Bird.

Meanwhile, the air temperature in the southern part of the east, in the Dnipropetrovsk region – “at night and during the day can range from 4 degrees of frost to 4 degrees of heat.”

“So contrasts on the territory of Ukraine will be preserved in our country“, – summed up the forecaster of UkrHMC.
