On Tuesday, January 20, geomagnetic activity with a K-index of 7.7 (red level) is forecast. This is a strong storm that can cause physical and emotional deterioration.

This was announced by NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC).

Magnetic storms affect atmospheric pressure, which can cause some people to experience headaches, fatigue, irritability and stress.

Geomagnetic activity is measured on a scale of 0 to 9 using the planetary K-index. If the indicator reaches 5 and above, it is considered a strong magnetic storm.

Forecasts of magnetic storms are subject to change, as experts update the data every three hours. It is recommended to regularly monitor for updates.

A magnetic storm is a phenomenon caused by flares and explosions on the Sun that release large amounts of energy into space. It consists of charged particles — protons and electrons — that move in different directions, including towards the Earth.

When these particles reach our planet’s magnetosphere, geomagnetic activity occurs, which scientists call magnetic or solar storms.

Levels of magnetic storms

The K-index is used to estimate power:

  • from 1 to 4 – weak fluctuations, usually imperceptible to people;

  • from 5 and above – red-level storms that can affect well-being;

  • with a K-index of 7–8, auroras are possible;

  • During severe storms, satellites, mobile communications, GPS and radio frequencies may be disrupted.

How magnetic storms affect people

Magnetic storms change atmospheric pressure, which can cause headaches, weakness, drowsiness, increased anxiety and stress. There is no specific medicine for this phenomenon, but the symptoms can be alleviated with the help of standard means.

How to help the body during magnetic storms

Experts advise:

  • adhere to the sleep and nutrition regime;

  • exclude fatty, salty, spicy food and alcohol;

  • reduce the amount of coffee;

  • drink more water and herbal teas;

  • walk more in the fresh air, but avoid direct sunlight;

  • perform light physical exercises;

  • avoid conflicts and stress;

  • people with chronic diseases should rest more and have the necessary medicines with them;

  • a contrast shower is useful in the morning, and a warm bath for relaxation in the evening
