An explosion occurred at a decommissioned gas station in Mykolaiv on the evening of February 22, injuring seven police officers who had arrived for a shift change. Two of the injured officers are reported to be in serious condition, according to Ivan Vygivskiy, head of the National Police of Ukraine.
Vygivskiy characterized the incident as a deliberate attack aimed at undermining law enforcement and destabilizing the situation within the country. The explosion took place at approximately 6:10 PM local time.
Earlier that day, at around 12:30 AM, police received reports of a break-in at a store on Danilyshyna Street in Lviv. Upon arrival, a police patrol experienced an explosion, followed by a second blast when a second unit arrived on the scene. Preliminary investigations indicate that homemade explosive devices were detonated.
As a result of the explosions in Lviv, one police officer was killed, and 25 others sustained injuries, including both law enforcement personnel and civilians. A criminal investigation has been initiated under Article 258, Part 2 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code, which pertains to acts of terrorism causing serious consequences. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) is conducting the preliminary investigation.
On the same day, authorities reported the arrest of a suspect believed to be responsible for the explosions. A court has since placed the suspect in custody.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned that intelligence reports indicate ongoing intentions by Russian forces to carry out further terrorist acts within Ukraine.
