A new survey showed that the majority of Ukraine’s population (58% of respondents) consider themselves happy.
This is evidenced by the results of a survey conducted by the Kiev International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) during December 2-10, 2024.
24% of respondents said they were definitely happy, and 34% chose the option “rather than not”. Another 25% of respondents replied “both yes or no.”
16% of respondents said that unhappy or more unhappy (8% replied “rather than so”, and another 8% chose the “No” answer.
The percentage of happy people from 2001 to 2010 increased from 38% to 65%, and the possible reason for such a significant increase in the level of happiness could be economic growth in Ukraine, which lasted from 2002 to the world economic crisis of 2008, sociologists said.
However, the economic difficulties of 2008 not only did not lead to a fall in happiness, but even its growth to 65% in 2010.
In December 2021, on the eve of the invasion, 71% of Ukrainians considered themselves happy, and 15%, on the contrary, did not consider themselves so. By December 2023, despite two years of a full -scale war, the figures remained virtually the same, and in the third year of the war, in 2024, the level of happiness decreased from 69% to 58%. This level of happiness was in Ukraine from 2012 to 2017.
With the beginning of the war, the level of happiness has not decreased, and during 2024 a percentage of happy Ukrainians decreased not by increasing the number of unhappy (now 16%, about the same amount before the beginning of the war), but by increasing the number of uncertain ones.
The level of happiness is traditionally affected: gender (men are somewhat happier than women, but it is largely due to the fact that women in Ukraine live for about 10 years longer than men, and with age the level of happiness in Ukraine decreases), age (with age the level of happiness in Ukraine is decreasing), health (among those who have experienced. The poor are only 38, and among the secured – twice as many, 77%), optimism (among the largest pessimists only 38%are happy, and among the largest optimists – 72%).
In addition, among those who do not trust Vladimir Zelensky, 46% are happy, and among those who fully trust – 69%.
“In sociological research it is easy to detect the adjustment of certain variables, but it is often difficult to say what is the effect of a special design design to answer this question. Therefore, we do not know whether this trust in Zelensky makes people happier or vice versa more happier people are more optimistic to perceive the surrounding world, including Zelensky, ”the researchers write.
KISIS CEO Volodymyr Paniotto noted that the level of happiness can be represented as a fraction, in the numerator of which is the level of achievement in a broad sense, and in the denominator – the level of encroachment, which is formed depending on the level of achievements of the reference group of the respondent.
“In the conditions of war, when millions of people suffer, the level of encroachment (the denominator of the formula of happiness) is significantly reduced, and it compensates for the troubles that people experience. It is clear that those who are in the war zone become unhappy, but they make up only a few percent, ”he said.
In addition, the level of happiness can be influenced by the fact that the cohesion of Ukrainian society has increased significantly, decreased regional differences, the value of the state for the population of Ukraine has increased, mutual support has increased, the socio-psychological climate has improved, the expert added.
“All this compensates for the deterioration of the situation and makes a decrease in the level of happiness more slowly,” he said.
The survey was conducted by telephone interviews (CATI) on the basis of a random sample of mobile telephone numbers (with a random generation of telephone numbers and subsequent statistical weighing). 1509 respondents aged 18 years and older were interviewed.
About 32% of Ukrainians surveyed are disappointed in the current government, the results of a survey of the Kiev International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) testify.
It should be reminded that in February at the beginning of March 2025, half of the Ukrainians (50%) believed that in no circumstances, Ukraine should not abandon the territories, even if the war lasts longer.
According to the results of a study conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) from February 14 to March 4, 2025, 87% of Ukrainians believe that Russia does not intend to stay in the occupied territories and seeks to destroy Ukraine.
Earlier, KIIS reported that in December 2024, President Vladimir Zelensky was trusted by 52% of Ukrainians, 39% were not trusted. The remaining 9% replied that they could not decide on their attitude.
